How to choose a crawler chassis for a telescopic aerial work platform

Nowadays, aerial work platforms, as important auxiliary tools for installation and maintenance, have been applied in many aspects of social construction. Among them, telescopic aerial work platforms are becoming the main force of such tools. So, when manufacturing aerial work platforms, how to select a telescopic crawler chassis for them? The key lies in solving two core problems: one is stable telescoping, and the other is reliable movement. Based on our 20 years of experience in crawler chassis design and manufacturing, we summarize the specific design and selection points as follows:

1. How to achieve safe and stable expansion and contraction

The telescopic mechanism of the chassis is the core for achieving changes in the chassis width. When selecting the type, particular attention should be paid to:

· Hydraulic System:

· Power: It is recommended to use independent dual hydraulic devices on each side to ensure sufficient power.

· Safety: Hydraulic circuits must be equipped with hydraulic locks to prevent accidental sliding after the extension is fully in place.

· Guidance Structure:

· Guide Rails: Between the main beams and cross beams on each side of the chassis, double guide rods should be installed to ensure smooth and stable extension.

· Cross Layout: The guide rods on both sides should be arranged alternately, which can achieve a larger extension range within a limited space.

· Special Technology: Some patented designs enable the tracks to adjust their width without leaving the ground, significantly enhancing the convenience of on-site operations. 

2. How to Ensure the Reliability of Movement in Complex Road Conditions

Structural design: Ensure "materials remain stable without deformation"

The telescopic mechanism will introduce weak points in the material structure, and these must be strengthened through design:

· High-strength materials and topology optimization: The load-bearing components such as the frame and the track beam must be made of high-strength steel, and topology optimization technology (similar to "X" or "H" type frame design) is used to eliminate redundancies and enhance stiffness.

· Strengthening of key areas: Stress concentration areas such as the leg support base and the connection points of the telescopic mechanism need to undergo hardness treatment with steel materials or increase the thickness of the materials, ensuring the structural safety and no deformation under heavy loads and telescopic conditions.

3. Craftsmanship and Reliability: Ensure "Durability"

The telescopic components operate in harsh conditions and require extra attention:

· Wear-resistant treatment: The surface of the telescopic guide rod must undergo wear-resistant treatments such as quenching; the sliding contact surfaces can be designed with replaceable wear-resistant sliders for easy maintenance in the future.

· Anti-deformation process: The welding of the frame should adopt the reverse deformation welding process to control the processing deformation and ensure the installation accuracy of the telescopic guide rail. 

4. Walking Mechanism: Ensure "Steady Movement"

The telescopic structure must not compromise the walking performance. The following parameters need to be calculated and verified:

· Grounding pressure: The selected target is ≤ 50 kPa. It protects the high-speed road surface and prevents subsidence under the soft road shoulder.

· Slope climbing capability: When fully loaded, it must meet ≥ 40% (approximately 22°)

· Ground clearance: ≥ 300mm. This prevents the chassis from bottoming out when passing over uneven roads.

· Travel speed: 0 - 2 km/h (for fine adjustment during operation) / 0 - 4 km/h (for short-distance transfer)
